Green Tea May Protect Against Eye Diseases

New research from Hong Kong suggests that green tea may protect against eye diseases such as glaucoma because the researchers found green tea antioxidants called catechins present in various tissue structures in the eyes of laboratory rats after they had ingested green tea.

The researchers, based at Hong Kong Eye Hospital, Kowloon, and the Prince of Wales Hospital, Shatin, in the New Territories, Hong Kong, have written about their findings in a paper that appeared in the 10th February print issue of the American Chemical Society’s bi-weekly Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Green tea contains catechins which belong to the family of antioxidants that includes vitamin C, vitamin E, lutein, and zeaxanthin and is well-known for its disease-fighting properties.

Until this study, however, nobody knew if green tea catechins actually passed from the stomach and gastrointestinal tract into the tissues of the eye.

For their investigation Dr Chi Pui Pang, of the Hong Kong Eye Hospital, and colleagues examined the eyes of dead rats that had been fed green tea extract for varying amounts of time.

When they examined the cornea, lens, retina, choroid-sclera, vitreous humor, and aqueous humor, they found evidence that these various eye structures had absorbed singificant amounts of individual catechins.

For example, the retina absorbed the highest levels of gallocatechin and the aqueous humor absorbed epigallocatechin.

They also found that the time of maximum concentration of the catechins varied from 0.5 to 12.2 hours and their effects in reducing harmful oxidative stress in the eye lasted for up to 20 hours after consumption.

Chi Pui Pang and colleagues concluded that:

“Our results indicate that green tea consumption could benefit the eye against oxidative stress.”

However, more studies are needed to verify the same effects occur in humans.

Review: Workout Pants and Tops from Yoga Hyde

Yoga pants work just as well for Pilates and they do for yoga. Except — some of them have elastic waist bands and are cut so low that when we do certain Pilates exercises we end up (so sue me) showing a lot more than we want to. Pilates Roll up gets some people the plumber award, and if that doesn’t get ya, stomach massage on the reformer will. Anyway, if you do Pilates, I bet you know what I mean.

Here’s a fun solution for you: Yoga Hyde’s Divine yoga pant is a hip hugger with a drawstring. If you need to cinch that thing really tight – and tie it twice – you can. The Divine is a cute pant and the whole Hyde line is mostly comfy organic cotton. Read my review: Workout Clothes from Yoga Hyde

Treating wrinkles is something that we all have to deal with as we age, some people get premature wrinkles but is the same problem, to get rid of wrinkles and sag skin is necessary to follow some simple tips that will improve your lifestyle and skin health.

Although aging is a natural process, the lack of a healthy lifestyle that we follow accelerates this process and make us show up premature wrinkles, sag skin, age spots, blemishes and other facial imperfections.

To treat wrinkles is necessary to begin by eating healthy foods full of vitamins, drinking a lot of water every day, taking multi vitamins and use sunscreen.

You should also avoid excess of sunlight, smoking, cosmetics with chemicals, alcohol, stress, toxins, etc. Those are some of the external factors that produce inflammation in our body and weakens collagen on the skin.

MP3 Pilates for This and That – In a Good Way

Written on February 20, 2010 – 1:49 pm | by admin

One of my favorite things about Pilates is that it has practical applications in daily life. We take what we learn in Pilates class and walk out onto the street with better posture, freer breathing, and improvements in core strength and flexibility that translate into everything else we do.

The basics of Pilates become the keys to better ways of doing athletic training, stress reduction, pre-natal exercise, and even sitting at the computer or on an airplane. Sherry Lowe-Bernie of Personalizing Pilates has been creating short Pilates training programs on MP3 that are specialized for those types of interests and more. I what Sherry is doing because she is not changing Pilates to “fit” a hodge podge of peoples needs. Her MP3 routines are built on solid Pilates fundamentals.

MP3 downloads from Personalizing Pilates are quick workouts. They are not full classes, but they make a lot of sense as prep for different activities. These MP3 routines also come with PDF documents that give written instructions and photos so you don’t have to worry about missing the instructions. There are 14 MP3 routines available. Plus a nice abdominal activation instruction that comes free with the downloads.
