Exploring Pilates and Yoga

Joseph Pilates is said to have been inspired by yoga and I believe it. Pilates and yoga make a great pair. I love the combination in my body.
I’ve just returned from a yoga class. It’s been a long time. It felt great. I felt strong and flexible, and at just about the same level I was when I was doing yoga regularly. Actually, I think I brought a little more insight into my movement this morning.
Reflecting on how easily I flowed into yoga this morning made me realize even more how well Pilates has been serving me. Over the years I’ve noticed that as long as I do Pilates, I can be away from yoga, come back to yoga, and feel just fine. But not so the other way around. If I do just yoga and take a long break from Pilates, then I go back to Pilates, well, let’s just say it’s not pretty. Pilates gives me the core strength that supports both yoga and Pilates.
A friend recently asked me about yoga/pilates combination classes. I haven’t experienced many, but I have this comment: Pilates and yoga compliment each other very well, but they are also very distinct disciplines. It might be difficult to find an instructor who is able to teach both Pilates and yoga with the depth that they deserve. Add to that the challenge of teaching them both together in the same class… that’s a tall order. I prefer to focus on each one separately.
