Pilates People, Return to Your Resolutions!

Yesterday, I watched a video by the world famous motivational speaker, Tony Robbins. In it, Mr. Robbins reported that research shows that by January 15, most people have already broken their New Years Resolutions. That doesn’t sound so good.

What doesn’t sound good about it is that people fall off their path or don’t get started, and then think: Oh that’s done, I’ve blown it. And that’s not true! You can start a resolution anytime you want, and you can salvage one anytime you want. Learn from your mistake delay. Ask yourself, what got me? Assess what kept you from following through on your resolution, and see what you can do about it. Oh, and please don’t bother with blame. It just drags you down.

You might start by asking yourself, Do I really want it? You might not. But if the answer is yes, I do want it, then you probably just need to go back and do some reality checking on what it takes to get there. Smaller steps perhaps? And to borrow a clue from Tony (you can’t help but get fond of the guy), build up the benefits of what it is you want to accomplish in your mind’s eye. Add feeling to it and get a sense of what it would be like to have it. Let the energy of a completed goal pull you forward.

Now let’s say, since you are here, that one or more of your goals had to do with getting in shape or more specifically, to do with Pilates. Maybe you want to get instructor training. Maybe you want to start Pilates classes. Maybe you just want to invigorate your practice. In any case, let’s take another hint from Tony Robbins: You need a plan. Vague resolutions are what get us in trouble.

So write down that goal or resolution and make a few notes about how you are going to get there. Then re-read your notes and think about how you are actually going to carry them off, how it will feel as you do it, and how good it will feel when you accomplish it.

If you are Pilates inclined, I’ll suggest you read (or re-read) my Pilates Anytime Resolutions. In it, I list a top 10 of Pilates goals, and include help for the plan on how to achieve each one. Don’t be a statistic. Statistics are boring! The year is still young, an infant really.
