Making good, high quality wine that resonates and stays on the palate long after it has left your mouth is one of the sure signs of a winery’s success in brewing an unforgettable vino. This age-old, super skilled profession is not as simple as it seems. A lot of research, experimentation and effort goes into making that bottle of exquisite wine.
Wine making starts with picking up the ingredients for primary flavor, which in this case would be grapes. Merlot is a variety of red grapes used in making many exquisite wines with a special hint of other flavors as well. Most of the Merlot Wines have an added fruit-flavor including those of plum, berries and currant amongst others. The Bordeaux wine is also made with the same variety of grapes.
From there, the grapes are sent for crushing. After they are crushed, they are left to ferment – how they are left depends on the type of wine you want to make. Rose wine, for instance, are made from red grapes which juices are allowed to remain in contact with their dark skins just long enough to pick up a little pink color. White wine, on the other hand, are made from fermenting juice of red grapes which have minimal contact with their dark skins. To reduce this complexity, they are commonly made by fermenting juice pressed from white grapes.
Even when the fermentation is going on, a little of yeast is made to come in contact with the grapes. This helps in transforming the element of sugar present in the grapes into ethanol and carbon dioxide. The remaining portion of sugar slowly turns into alcohol and later they are put in oak barrels before being bottled.
It is common knowledge for wine brewers that Merlot can be used for successfully blending with other grapes. Using it to their advantage, some new flavors can be developed to the delight of wine connoisseurs. They not only serve as blending agent but also as the primary ingredient for a number of grape wines.
In order to create any new blended flavor to the wines, a variety of grapes are used in different ways for the purpose. Some of these grapes popular with the wine brewer for their unique taste and texture include Cabernet Savignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec amongst others. All of these grapes stand out for the kind of unique flavor they lend to a variety of wines. Cabernet Savignon is famous for its green pepper flavor which is developed with the help of its unique characteristics displayed in fermenting.
Specific varieties of grapes like Merlot can be used to make different flavors and textures come together which makes it easy to develop innovative wines. The taste of the wine directly depends on the flavors and textures of the grapes and the way they are fermented.
